Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Res.1/MA.30.4.32. TESTING SMITH INSTRUMENTS FOR U SERIES 25HP. It will be necessary for more thorough tests to be done on the new Smith instruments, until we have learnt more about them. We are therefore stating a few tests which we have found necessary from dealing with the instruments we have received. Inspection of Patch Instruments. (1) There is a slight tendency for the dial to become loose from the casing of the instrument. This especially applies to the petrol gauge. (2) A location is provided on the securing rim of the instrument to insure the dial being up right in the patch. It is important that the position of the location should be correct relative to the dial readings. We have had instruments that have not been up right in the patch from this fault. Inspection of Petrol Gauge Tank Units. The float arm is liable to become distorted in transit. In such cases it will be necessary to reset the float arm from the drawing. Testing The Accuracy of the Instruments. The thermometer. These should be checked over a range of 60oC-100oC. The makers state that no thermometer leaves their works with more than 2oC error. Instruments with a larger error than 3oC should be returned to the Makers. We have had one instrument with an average error of 10oC. Petrol Gauge, Oil Gauge and Ammeter. We should like the Test Dept. to watch these instruments to see if any further bench tests are necessary. A.T. Speedometer and Clocks. These should require no additional testing than at present.
