Gearbox for SpectreCodename for Phantom III 3-S-1.

10,000 Miles Test.

We should like the gearbox for this car to be No. 3.HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} as at present fitted, except that the 1st motion shaft should have ball bearings. We do not want needles for the free pinion, nor endwise clamping of the shafts.

You will see from the table in our last memo on SpectreCodename for Phantom III gearboxes that the backlash in all the continuous gears is excessive. Will you please fit new gears having no more backlash than those in the Vulture. The clutch splines also should be no worse than a standard Phantom.

We attach a further table of backlash including a production 40/50 chassis. The figures for this latter explain the complaints of chunking in 3rd gear.

We have seen Hdy.{William Hardy} about the wear of the clutch splines on SpectreCodename for Phantom III 1, and we should like hardened splines for the test in France. Will you give us your views as to whether you prefer the type of splines at present fitted, or the type used in the Phantom.

Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}
