X.3601.-GOSHAWK STARTING HANDLE.

Referring to scheme N.653 showing the above redrawn to incorporate the points suggested by Mr. Royce, would you kindly note that Mr. Royce would like to modify still further as follows:-

(1) Owing to the retaining screw not being considered a satisfactory job on the handle the grip spindle should now be made put into the lever on a taper as in sketch -

The grip itself should be made of a simple piece of brass tubing with celluloid heavily moulded on to it, and forming a recess at one end for the collar on the spindle. The spindle is turned from bar and drilled up. It can have a cross oil hole in it and, if considered necessary, a counter screw at the front end for closing the bore after oiling

(2) The length of the crank arm should be reduced from 7 1/2" to 7".

(3) The front bearing for the starter shaft should have its clamping bolt parallel to the starting shaft so that it will not throw the bearing out of alignment when being tightened.

(4) The snout on the rear support for the starting shaft should be made shorter and the collar for the spring should be made in the form of a cowling from steel tubing which slides over the snout when the shaft is engaged.
