The object is to afford more protection for the spring against mud and dirt. The lower end of the spring housing should be drilled for draining out any water which may accumulate. The snout should be made parallel. The spring housing should allow more clearance sideways for the shaft than shown on scheme N.653.

(5)

Mr. Royce would now like to make the starting shaft from a weldless steel tube butted at the jaw end to provide for the taper and thread. He thinks that we should buy these butted tubes of suitable dimensions To accomodate this alteration this of the taper on the jaw should be altered from 1 in 60 to 1 in 10, and the thread increased in diameter.

(6)

The form of the starting jaws should be as indicated on drawing LeC.1312 which we are posting today.

(7)

The taper plug should be fastened in position on the engine starting jaw by riveting or rolling operation, as in sketch.-

The plug can be first pressed into position against the turned collar if made a tight fit in the bore, and its protruding end can then be riveted or rolled over.
