HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}) FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}) E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer}) Cr{Mr Cra???ster / Mr Chichester} to EG. WOR.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} DY.{F R Danby} ORIGINAL LES R6/M14.9.32. x 7360 v 66360 BRAKE THUMPS. It has occurred to many of us that to couple the brakes up altogether instead of letting the foot pressure fall on the rear brakes only would get rid of some complication, and some of the brake troubles called thumps. I had mentioned this matter to HDY.{William Hardy}, and I understand that Derby have made an experiment also. We shall however have to be careful as the scheme we are using at present does effectively brake the car even when making short shunts. In other words we do not at present have to wait for the servo pull. The other point is that as arranged the foot pressure from the very lightest is utilised to make the servo act independent of any work the foot has to do against the pull of springs. I rather understand that with the Derby experiments this feature is not embodied, and the result would be that the servo only receives part of the foot pressure, so might be very feeble with light pressures, and multiply rapidly, and so spoil its progressive- ness.
