HOW TO DETERMINE THE CORRECT ARM POSITION FOR LOVEJOY HYDRAULIC SHOCK ABSORBERS

[Illustration of a short arm shock absorber]
Scale or Ruler
2-5/8"
SHORT ARM ABSORBER, usually used on front.

[Illustration of a long arm shock absorber]
3-1/8"
LONG ARM ABSORBER, usually used on the rear.

Straps should be accurately fitted to absorbers to give the correct arm position. Lengths of strap, as shipped from our factory, are supposed to be right for the installation fittings and car are marked for. Before discarding a strap as too short, be sure that it is well stretched and that the locking-wedge is driven tight in strap bracket. In some cases, a strap may appear to be too short, before stretching, but still come up to the proper length when well stretched.
The correct position for a long or short arm is found by measuring from the top of the absorber cover to the top of the arm, just back of strap clamp. This distance on an absorber with a short arm should be 2-5/8" and on one with a long arm 3-1/8".
If, after thoroughly stretching the strap into place, the arm is found to be 1/4" higher or lower than these measurements it will make no material difference.
Two scales or rulers may be used to check these measurements, as illustrated above.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR ATTACHING STRAPS TO BRACKETS AND SHOCK ABSORBERS.

[Illustrations labeled 1., 2., 3. showing how to attach straps to brackets]

(1) Insert strap from lower side of bracket, with locking-wedge towards body of absorber.
(2) Double wedge end up, pull through bracket.
(3) Insert locking-wedge in opening and attach to arm of absorber.
(4) Place bar under end of arm, using block as a fulcrum, and stretch wedge and strap thoroughly into place.

NOTE, - Bracket #B-5 is illustrated here. There are several other types of strap brackets on all of which the method of attaching the straps is similar to that shown here. Strap lengths are measured from end to end of the strap itself, not including the wedge.
