HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} TO BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} (struck out) FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} (struck out) (At Le CanadelHenry Royce's French residence.) C. to BJ. WOR.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} ORIGINAL R4/M16.4.27. REC'D DURING EASTER, AND DESPATCHED 20.4.27. PHANTOM TAPPET NOISES. X8060 T8090 (struck out) I think we should be quite certain that the alteration of the rockers is really the thing which is making the valves fall on their seats more quietly. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} and R.{Sir Henry Royce} cannot see any reason for a definite improvement because the scrub is even greater, and the valve must be the full amount of the slack out of place. I do not say Derby is wrong, but owing to want of reason for the improvement, I say it should be doubly confirmed.
