TELE: GERRARD 362. X442 BANK BUILDINGS, 16, St.{Capt. P. R. Strong} JAMES' STREET, LONDON, S.W. 1. 4th November, 1924 E.W. Hives Esq. Messrs. Rolls-Royce Ltd. Nightingale Road DERBY. Dear Sir, The Silencer to which Mr. Basil Johnson referred in which I am interested is the "ASPER" Silencer. The Makers represent that it does not reduce the power of the engine as the ordinary Silencer would, but that the engine with this attached will give even better power than with an open exhaust. They further claim that it will reduce petrol consumption by 20%. I enclose a few typed notes with reference to this Silencer. The special point of it is that by its design a vacuum is created and the exhaust gases are rapidly discharged. If this Silencer actually does what is claimed for it and gives better results so far as power is concerned than the open exhaust I need not enlarge upon what its use will mean so far as Aero Engines are concerned. At the present moment my friend Mr. Leslie Walton of the Vauxhall Company is testing the Silencer both on the bench and on the road and from what he has told me, so far as they have gone, the Silencer seems to do what the Makers claim, but he is preparing for me a full report on the matter. Yours faithfully, Alfred Moyes-Smith | ||
