Phantom III Back Axle.

We send herewith N.Sch.4888 showing increased length of the outer splines on the driving piece between the axle shaft and the hub which has been asked for by the Experimental Department to avoid knocks due to excessive wear of the hub splines.

To obtain room for this increase the distance between the hub bearings has been reduced.

We show a shortened axle shaft which means, of course, new axle shafts for the next 10,000 mile car, on which it is desired to try this scheme. If it is not practicable to make new shafts in the time, the existing shafts can be used with a driving piece trepanned from both sides, as shewn by the scrap view, but this is obviously not the best arrangement for permanent use as it weighs more and is presumably more costly than as shewn by the main scheme.

A ball bearing has been substituted for the roller bearing at present used on the outside of the hub as the ball bearing appears to have adequate load capacity and saves cost and weight.
