1285 Experimental Dept. Rm {William Robotham - Chief Engineer} /Std.6/MH. {M. Huckerby} 1st. September 1938. Messrs. Price's Lubricants Ltd., Belmont Works, Battersea, LONDON, S.W.11. For the attention of Mr.J.W.G.Brooker. Dear Sirs, Referring to your letter of 26th. August, addressed to our Mr.H.Royce, this has been passed on to the writer who deals with this anti-freeze question. During last Winter and this Summer we have run experimental cars with "Zero" Glycerine Anti-freeze in their cooling systems and have satisfied ourselves that it has no ill effects. We shall shortly, therefore, add the recommendation to our instruction books that "Zero" may be used as an alternative to Ethylene Glycol. We shall also shortly adopt the practice of delivering new cars with anti-freeze already in their water systems, and are naturally anxious to minimise the cost of this measure - to do this we propose to use Glycerine instead of Ethylene Glycol. In view of the fact that we can buy Glycerine as such for approx. 5/- per gallon, we consider your figure of 7/3d. per gallon excessive and are carrying out tests with this Glycerine to decide whether we can use it as a standard Anti-freeze. In the event of this being possible we shall obviously use forfor our production cars and it will therefore be necessary to expand our instruction book recommendation to read Glycerine generally instead of mentioning any specific brand. Yours faithfully, for ROLLS-ROYCE LTD. | ||
