With regard to the repeated failure of the above part, all the examples submitted appear to shew that the

sliding joint B. does not work when the feed pipe is heating up, possibly due to the initial expansion of length A.{Mr Adams} and also to initial cross wind which may be in the same direction.

When the pipe cools down it then withdraws a little from B. and takes up a fresh position for cross winding again when the pipe is re-heated.

Finally the heater pipe assumes some shape as shewn by the dotted lines, and throttles the flow of gas by the flattening of the section at the elbow.

It appears to us that if the gx heater connection could be definitely fixed at the bottom end as well as the top, and the pipe made sufficiently flexible, the trouble could be overcome.

The following alterations are therefore proposed for application to an existing chassis':-

(1) Use .625 dia. pipe instead of .750 brazed into a nipple at top end to fit existing union.

(2) Make pipe of shape shewn to provide flexibility.

(3) Tap induction pipe casting .812 dia. thread to suit suitable screwed connection brazed to pipe having square shoulder, and if necessary metal packing washer to position pipe.

SKETCH.

It is expected that the reduction in the pipe dia. and its increased length will not apparently reduce the jacket heating effects with the presence of the ex-butterfly valve.

Also if the exhaust flow from the latter half of the engine with the butterfly closed is too much throttled there is always a remedy. These are matters for test.

We should be glad if you could prepare a scheme on these lines for criticism and final submission to R.{Sir Henry Royce}
