Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Ed.{J. L. Edwards}4/MH.{M. Huckerby}6.3.39. SUMMARY OF SECOND 100 HOURS CONTRACT RUNNING ON C.I. 4-STROKE UNIT. Introduction. Running was commenced on the 17.7.31 and completed on the 5.10.32. Range of Investigation. (A) Original Cylinder. (1) Development of nozzles and injectors. (2) Fuel injection pump experiments. (3) Rotational air swirl tests. (4) Volumetric efficiency. (5) Mechanical efficiency. (6) Effects of injection timing on starting. (7) Ramming Pipes. (8) Piston experiments. (9) Reduced compression ratio experiments. (B) Modified Cylinder. (1) Power loss occasioned by modified cylinder. (2) Volumetric efficiency. (3) Compression pressures. (4) Mechanical efficiency. General Conclusions. (1) Integral nozzle valve and seat construction is preferable as it gives lower injection pressures with a higher BMEP. This is the construction employed on the Bosch injector. (2) Less spray divergence is required if rotational swirl is employed. | ||
