Saving Costs on the Bentley.

We are disappointed in the support which we receive from the Works and Costing Dept. with regard to efforts which we make to cheapen parts on the car.

In Sft{Mr Swift}/Set.1/BH.20.11.35, a lot of unfavourable comparisons were made between the cost of the Packard and the R.R. silencer system. The matter was taken to heart and in six months from the date in question we had developed, tested and completed a 15,000 miles test in France on a cheaper and lighter exhaust system. We estimate that the saving in cost per silencer would be at least £2. 0. 0d.

We sent the Standardisation Sheet to the Works on the 6th June, and just 10 weeks later it has reached G/Rb.{R. Bowen} for costing. There appears to us to be something basically wrong with the organisation. Generally speaking it seems easier to get a cost through when the price is increased than when it is decreased.

In future when we circulate a standardisation sheet on which we expect to save money, we propose to state this fact on a note accompanying the sheet to Sft.{Mr Swift} We shall be glad if arrangements could be made so that as far as possible such sheets receive priority.
