MINUTES PASSED AT CONFERENCE AT MIDLAND HOTEL, DERBY, 18TH AUGUST 1920. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} WORKS AGENDA. (1) Springs, Future Policy and supply of same. Agreed - To go back to pre-war Rear Springs, but that no changeover to this type of Spring should be carried out on older chassis. The first lot of springs with these thin leaves to go to U.S.A. (2) Coachbuilding at Derby. Agreed - That Hy.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} should make private enquiries as to the possibility of acquiring a controlling interest in Messrs Holmes & Co. (3) America, Policy as regards Experimental work. Agreed - (a) Springfield is a factory where chassis will be made, particulars of which will be made from Derby, and no alterations of design will be made by Springfield unless approved by Derby. (b) The Staff chosen and sent out from Derby were selected as "Reproducers"; this need not interfere with them making suggestions. These suggestions would be welcomed at Derby. (c) Experiments arising out of suggestions made by Springfield will be carried out at Derby. Experiments which for climate or local reasons should be made in U.S.A. will be carried out by the Chief Engineer's Staff. (d) Road tests of 10,000 or 20,000 miles in U.S.A. will be conducted by the Chief Engineer's Staff. Springfield will be consulted while this car is in U.S.A. and given opportunities of making any suggestions. (e) EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} to arrange for a man to replace Caswell, any way temporarily. (f) D.{John DeLooze - Company Secretary} to look into the contract with R.Inc. to see if it was in order for R.R.Ltd. to have a representative out in Springfield to control the quality of output, and who would be paid by and be under the direct supervision of R.R.Ltd. This we consider necessary if the quality of output is to be maintained. (4) Reduction of Output and increase in manufacture of chassis parts. Agreed - That at the top of the Agenda for the Derby Conference should be "make all parts of the chassis." | ||
