-4- (15) Contd. Agreed that Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} and Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} should discuss this with R.{Sir Henry Royce} and then report to CJ. (16) REAR AXLE PINION THRUST. Cars now being made have the new double thrust. For cars which have been delivered and which have developed this trouble a modification which can be applied is being tested experimentally; at present they can only change the back axle and put on another which may develop the same trouble. EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} urged that, as regards cars sent in for repair in connection with this trouble, the simple key device recommended by BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} should be used, as it could not do any harm and might prevent further trouble. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} will obtain R's consent to this. (17) GEAR BOXES. REF. CHASSIS 118.UG. It was pointed out that a great deal of the trouble was due to faulty ball bearings and not due to bad gears. We are now testing on a special rig all ball bearings before being placed on cars. (18) CLAPPING OF BACK AXLE. It was not understood what this term meant, it was thought it referred to the knocks of the springs on the rollers. (19) BRAKES LOSING POWER AFTER 3000 OR 4000 MILES, OWING TO MATERIAL GETTING SHINY. (a) Sales Department were asked to bring an example of this to Works. (b) Rg.{Mr Rowledge} said he thought on the present big car we ought to get out a conversion scheme for four wheel brakes. CJ. undertook to write to R.{Sir Henry Royce} on this matter. (20) BOILING. A note has been received from R.{Sir Henry Royce} for trying a new cowl in conjunction with the fan on Armoured Cars. It is known some of our cars have been disgracing themselves on Alpine Passes by water boiling, whereas cars of other makes do not, ascending same Passes under same conditions. The only thing done at present is to send a larger pulley to one owner. It was considered most urgent to find out in the Shop the effect of larger pulley, and if suitable, send out larger pulleys to all cars used on Alpine Passes. | ||
