JGM/VB. 1331 2nd. May. 1941. Mr. W.A. Robotham; Messrs. Rolls-Royce, Ltd., DERBY. Dear Mr. Robotham, When we learned from Mr. Hardy a few days ago that the first modification we had made to the 6.50/16 mould had not effected as much reduction in squealing on sharp corners as you would like, we proceeded to make the second of the two modifications described to you in earlier correspondence. Tyres from the modified mould have been despatched to you today. We should like you to test those tyres and the undersigned would also like to call upon you in the near future in order to discuss this and other problems. Will you suggest a date suitable to you. I would as previously, travel by train, and would probably reach Derby about mid-day. We have learned a little more regarding the wide base rim development, and in order that you may be kept posted, I have attached to this letter a copy of the report of the recent Meeting of American Motor Car, Tyre & Rim Manufacturers, sponsored by the Tyre & Rim Association, in order to discuss this development. I have also attached blue prints of drawings TR.{Capt. F. W. Turner - Finance}10-30-40.M, TR{Capt. F. W. Turner - Finance}-10-30-40-L-1, TR{Capt. F. W. Turner - Finance}-10-30-40-K, which detail the new wide base rims. This report summarises the information on this development which we have obtained from other sources, and is in our opinion a fair statement of the position. You will observe that for the present the Americans are using on these wider base rims tyres actually designed to suit existing rims. This phase of the development is one about which we feel somewhat uncertain. We fear risk of bead trouble, and think that any Motor Car Manufacturer who contemplated following American practice would be well advised to test the tyres and rims he proposed to use, very thoroughly before standardising. Having this fear in our minds, we have drawn down the various fitments agreed by the Americans and from their appearance we think it might be safe to use the following:- P.T.O. | ||
