The standard of silence was fairly good when new except for booms at low speeds. The exhaust became noisy during the mileage and it was found that the centre baffle in the silencer had blown out. The glass wool had partially fused; this is attributed to sustained maximum speeds and would be less likely to occur under normal conditions.

Undersheets.

The simple design was appreciated for ease of dismantling, and was also effective in keeping the engine and dashboard free from road dirt.

Radiator.

The original Marston's matrix was punctured early in the running. This was caused by the support strip behind the dummy shutters and resulted from hitting a pheasant. A modification to this strip has been called for.

The replacement matrix fitted was a Morris 'B' type block and gave no trouble during 11,894 miles running.

No water was added during the first 2,117 miles running and the level was then 0.8" above the bottom of the header tank. Subsequently irregular losses of water occurred, possibly due to the cracked valve seats.

The average top water temperature, with the thermostat in operation was 76°C.

Starting Handle LOP.MB.4135. FD.{Frank Dodd - Bodies}180.

This was satisfactory and easy to operate. The design should provide for somewhere to put it when not in use. The FCD.849 bracket for the front support and fog lamp was too flexible. This has already been modified.

Pyrene Front Bumper.

The O.S. bolt holding the bar to the spring sheared upon impact with a dog. This allowed the bumper bar to be driven back into the wing. A better material for the bolts is required, if this make is to be adopted.
