| To E.R. from HDY.{William Hardy} SECRET. c. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} 10,000 miles Test on SpectreCodename for Phantom III. Referring to the gearbox complaints by GWH{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux} on 3.S.1. referred to in Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}13/E.10.7.35, our remarks are as follows:- Synchromesh Poor. We cannot account for this as we understood that the SpectreCodename for Phantom III box was satisfactory as regards the gear change on all gears. It appears that until this particular box is examined we cannot form any certain idea of the trouble. Not up to standard for quickness. We are aware of this deficiency but know of no design fault in the box which when compared with our standard practice could be said to account for it. Gears with Cadillac correction and softer rubber mounting are instructed. Noise is said to come from the change gear gate. We have nothing instructed to improve this, except the use of a leather gaiter around the lever but we believe that the Experimental Department are working on the problem. Loss of Oil. This appears to have become prominent as the result of sustained high speeds and high temperatures reached in France. We understand that the oil builds up in the vicinity of the ball bearing of the servo worm shaft at the damper governor side. We have not had time to suggest a remedy yet. CONTINUED:- | ||
