Re asbestos covering on rear Exhaust Pipe.
I.477

J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} 8-5-14.
R.{Sir Henry Royce}
E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer}
Na.{Mr Nadin}
Mr Dalley.

This experiment arose out of complaints that on some chassis the woodwork at the rear of the body has been charred due to the proximity of the Swan Neck Exhaust Pipe.

On 28/5/13 Mr Royce instructed through Mr Elliott that an experiment should be made with an exhaust system having no coverings on the front or rear silencers. This was reported on by Mr Hives on 14/1/14 as not very satisfactory, and Mr Royce then wished us to make a test in which the swan neck pipe was insulated with an asbestos covering.

The works were instructed on 13/2/14 and a chassis so fitted was handed to Mr Hives 26/2/14. Three further sets were instructed up by the D.O. on 3/4/14, one set being fitted to 58NA{Mr Nadin} and a second to 1926.

We attach herewith Mr Hives report on same.
