Millbank. S.W.1.

Dear Sirs,

Revised Schedule of Reserved Occupations.

1. With reference to Circular letter P.4339 of 4th April, your attention is drawn to the fact that, in a large number of occupations, the ages of reservation are raised at stages A,B and C.

2. In order to meet the requirements of the Fighting Services, it is essential that the largest possible number of men should be released from industry as a result of these changes. It is, therefore, necessary that in order to maintain and to increase production, you should at once review the position of your employees who will be affected. It will be essential for you to recruit suitable substitutes and to train them to take the places of men who will join H.M. Forces. You will appreciate that, in view of the man power position, female labour must be employed to the fullest extent practicable.

3. Revised procedure for deferment of enlistment will shortly be announced. In future, deferment will be strictly limited to cases of proved necessity and will only be available if the man is of vital importance to production on M.A.P. contracts and if it can be shown that every effort has been made to effect substitution.

4. In view of the foregoing, it is of great importance for you to take the following action;
(a) To train substitutes for men who will be de-reserved.
(b) To apply for deferment in those cases only where the conditions set out in para.2 are satisfield.

5. For the present, applications for deferment for men de-reserved at stage A may be made to L.2, Ministry of Aircraft Production, Harrogate. As to men de-reserved at stages B and C, further instructions will be issued as soon as the revised procedure is available.

Yours faithfully.

(Sgd) H.R. Chapman.
Director of Labour.
