PHANTOM III.

In several of our experimental Ph.III. units the gauze suction filters in the sump have been found badly collapsed and distorted.

This can be caused in either of the following ways:-

(1) Starting with cold oil where the gauze is subjected to a depression.

(2) Withdrawal of the filter from the lower half, the fitting sleeve of the gauze being tight in its housing and the gauze taking the effect of this tightness.

In view of the above we recommend that an internal guard be fitted to stiff wire mesh as per the guard used on the Ph.III. pressure filter.

At present there is nothing to prevent the gauze collapsing other than its own stiffness.
