To Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} from Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} x985 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}3/LG29.6.25. Petrol and Engine Detonations. Referring to Brl/H27.6.25 attached. We agree, from our general experience, that 'BP' petrol is worse for detonation than 'Shell'. We have not had much experience with 'Pratts'. It is difficult to lay down any fixed value for any petrol with regard to detonation because it can so easily change. On the whole we have found that the 'Shell' people do intelligently blend their petrols so as to reduce the tendency for detonation. We should not think it can be proved that the fact that the petrol filter was green and corroded, the fuel was poor. We think the way 'N' are dealing with customers using 'BP' petrol is the most satisfactory i.e., we prove to them their complaint of detonation is overcome if they use one of the other well-known brands of petrol.
