[Typed Letterhead] TELEPHONE No. GERRARD 1654. 15, CONDUIT STREET, LONDON, W. [Typed Address and Date] Grand Hotel Neues Kurhaus, Levico, South Tyrol. Sept. 8th., 1912. F.H. Royce Esq., Westwood, Crowborough. [Typed Body] My dear F.H.R., I enclose some more results of tests made on hills out here. These tests appear to confirm the belief that the plate which blocks up the opening of the dashboard has the effect of making the water [strikethrough: xxx] hotter. I cannot therefore quite understand how it is that the experimental department supplied us with figures, which satisfied us that this was not the case, and that they led us to agree that the opening under the dashboard might be filled up. It seems to me that we must not fill up this opening and, if you agree, I should be glad if you would transmit this to the Works for instruction to that effect. Yours ever, pp. C. Johnson. [Handwritten Annotations] [Top left annotation] Mr Barrington - note Mr Royces remarks J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} Pingale [Right margin, vertical] Object being, free cooler, an effective fan, and every freedom of exit. [Bottom annotation by F.H. Royce] In connection with the larger radiator a larger fan should be provided, the largest possible also test the following points. (1) More 6 Blades definitely superior & 3 of as would still more be better. Consider effective amount of air circulated rather than power absorbed. (2) Would wider blades improve matter. (3) Construct one in steel with steel blades of reduced curvature. (4) Also of increased angles especially near the hub.
