Herewith we send N. sch. 3230. shewing the modifications to the dogs on the epicyclic 3rd. speed box which we suggest are indicated by testing thos on 14-EX. The object of the changes to the vacuum operated dogs is to avoid the pronounced clicking sound which occurs on that bar while the speeds are being syncronised. In the case of the hand operated jaws, in addition to this object, the radiusing of the engaging side to provide a safeguard against engagement when the speeds are widely different. We suggest that a fresh set of dogs should be made for 14-EX. on the lines of the hand operated dogs on N. sch. 3230., and that this job is very urgent as the fate of the Japan 3. box may depend on the result.
