Re 3 1/2 litre Bentley B-38-EF
Axle Short of Oil

With reference to the complaint on the above, we have gone into this matter very thoroughly and we are able to show a definite record whereby the level of oil in this axle was definitely checked and made O.K. after its final road test.

We have found it necessary when checking for oil level in the axle that this should be done while the axle is warm. To make this check, or to try and measure the amount of oil in the axle in a cold condition is unsatisfactory, owing to the amount of oil which clings inside the axle.

It has been suggested that it is possible for oil to have been lost from the axle during transport should the car be put into an excessive lean to the on or off side; the oil may feed into the axle tubes and not return to the axle casing. Is there any sign of oil being drained from the overflow pipe on either rear brake drum cover?

It would seem, in view of this possibility, that it is advisable for the oil level in the axle to be checked before delivery of a car to the customer, and after it has done tests as a complete car.
