REPORT.

With reference to CWH's report at 12,196 miles, the following steps are being taken to rectify the troubles he reported during the mileage.

(1) Stronger split retaining rings were designed and fitted and ran 4677 miles without giving trouble.

(2) These failures were traced to incorrect piston material being used in the special sand castings originally used.

(3) We have no excuses to make for this particular piston. The failure requires further design consideration.

(4) We are arranging a tank baffle to overcome this trouble when electric petrol pumps are utilised. The R.R. mechanical petrol pump, will, however, be available on the next Bentley car.

(5) The starter gear ratio has been lowered to cope with this trouble.

(6) This release valve has been a standard fitting on the 20/25 for several years.

(7) This oil leak is generally due to inadequate engine breathing. A good breather has been designed and fitted to the 2nd Bentley car which should largely overcome this trouble. It will be observed that the oil consumption was quite reasonable throughout the running of this car.

(8) This scraper ring failure requires further investigation.

(9) We were warned of the weakness experienced in the S.U. petrol pump before it occurred. The makers have supplied us with further pumps and they claim to have eliminated the trouble.

(10) It would appear that this oil pipe requires further support and it should receive design consideration.

(11) This is a standard 20/25 crankshaft damper. We attribute the necessity for adjustment at 10,000 miles to the fact that this preliminary Bentley crankshaft has been running rather near its critical period at the road speeds attainable.
