To EY. from Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} c. to CJ. c. to Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} c. to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Le CanadelHenry Royce's French residence. X4329 Dal/M20.4.22. GOSHAWK 11. SHOCK ABSORBER. X.4329. As promised we send herewith N.sch.1254 shewing the rear shock absorber in the inverted position, that is, with the ball end on the axle attached to the spring pad so that it is not affected by the thickness of the spring and the connecting rod in tension on the bump. It will be seen that this arrangement entirely prevents the possibility of toggling in addition to the advantage referred to above in connection with various thicknesses of springs. We send this in case the arrangement shewn on N. sch. 1252 is found in any way to be unsuitable but we think that this method should be adhered to for the present, as the scheme shewn on 1254 is somewhat of a radical departure. We should like to point out that the ball end shewn on the lever on N.sch.1252 is also suitable for use with the front shock absorber lever by slightly setti setting the latter.
