RMS/R.7.1.38.

Lucas Ammeters.

As you know, we have had a good deal of trouble with the present ammeter, and it has caused several expensive breakdowns on P.III.

At one time we used the Lucas Ammeter for several series of Bentley cars. It costs about one-third of the price of the Western, and, on the whole, has a better record than the Western instrument.

The reason we went away from the Lucas instrument was because it was thought it would oscillate with the voltage control regulator to an undesirable extent. From ammeters we have on test, however, we feel there is not a great deal to choose between the Lucas and the Western in this respect.

We are, therefore, starting off a standardisation sheet for a Lucas Ammeter, the suggestion being that we fit 25 sets to Bentley cars and keep a record of their performance. Obviously, we should like to use the Lucas Ammeter for B.50 if it behaves satisfactorily.
