| PHANTOM III. DEPOT SHEET Hd. {Mr Hayward / Mr Huddy} 371. ARMATURE FUSE. Referring to Rm {William Robotham - Chief Engineer} /CWH.11/N.24.1.38. the matter of the armature fuse not being in itself probably a final solution is concurred in. Personally, I have not been satisfied that we knew the whole story, and your remark as to what was brought up at Paris falls into line with other facts, which demonstrate that we have got to go considerably further before we finally eliminate the trouble. The points I have in mind are :- (a). The cartridge fuse could be doubtful, but it is clear that this was not the real trouble as it would not always be an armature fuse which was a bad one. (b). The question of the tightness of the contact has been a matter which has been pressed upon the Works' attention on a number of occasions, in one instance we scrapped a batch of material for this cause alone. (c). The demand on the system on a Phantom lll is increased over that on the other cars, and this coupled with the other two factors is undoubtedly responsible for making the 30amp. fuse unreliable, our recommendations, therefore, have been modified to the following extent :- (1). We have modified the armature fuse proposed following a suggestion by Hd {Mr Hayward / Mr Huddy} /SB. {Mr Bull/Mr Bannister} to obtain contact at the base of the clip instead of at its upper end. (2). The fuse wire is being increased from a 30 ampere fuse to a 45 ampere fuse. We think that for cars in service this will completely prevent the armature fuse blowing without apparently due cause.
