The noise levels of Watford EW.6 magnetos and the switch to a quieter continuous cam ring type.

With the exception of the machine on 14-EX (see Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/AJLL/LG18.6.28), all the EW6. Watford magnetos on experimental cars are now of the continuous cam ring type. We have comparatively recently received sufficient machines of this type to change them all over. Our previous reports of the noisiness of the EW6. magnetos referred to machines with the old or built-up type of cam ring, and these were agreed to be noisy, and generally speaking noisier than the Lucas, by all concerned. Some of the Lucas machines have developed noise with much running though in certain einstances these have remained quiet. Now that we have persuaded Messrs. North to provide continuous cam rings we are very much better off on the score of noise. It remains to be seen whether these Watford machines with continuous cam rings maintain their quietness after many miles of running. We think there is a good chance of this, but at present none have done more than 2,000 miles. EFC. | ||
