PHANTOM RELIEF VALVES.

In the production of the relief valves/of [handwritten] the springs have been altered to those instructed and passed by the Expl: Dept: [Handwritten note in margin: the values]

The reason for this is apparently the result of the bow spring coming out at a much higher rating than those manufactured and tested in the Expl: Dept: with the result that higher rating low pressure springs have been fitted to close the valve [word 'valve' is struck through]. This increases the oil pressures considerably and does not conform with our requirements.

In conjunction with BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} we have got out a low pressure spring as a compromise to bring down the pressures to reasonable limits, until full investigations have been carried out in the manufacture of the bow springs.

We give a chart shewing No.1 as [text struck through] passed to D.O. for production. No.2. as works produced. No.3. as agreed to for the time being.
