Rm {William Robotham - Chief Engineer} /Gry. {Shadwell Grylls} 8/MH. {M. Huckerby} 13.9.38. STEEL WHEELS. Da {Bernard Day - Chassis Design} /Ev. {Ivan Evernden - coachwork} 19/G.S.9.38. With regard to this memo, we are in agreement that the spring in chromium centre which has to be prised out with a screwdriver is not a Rolls-Royce affair. We are not so emphatic that the joint of the rim and the hub cannot be painted and must look ugly. Millions of motor cars "get away" with this feature. Ev {Ivan Evernden - coachwork} 's suggestion of holding an outer disc with a spring ring appears to us not to be practicable without a change in rim design. The tool cost of that would be prohibitive. There remains the Talbot arrangement for holding either just a centre or a complete disc. Although not directly applicable to the front, Da {Bernard Day - Chassis Design} 's suggestion that it should be bayonet fastened to the front hub and to a dummy extension of the rear brake drum seems to us the best idea. We recommend a drawing be made of this scheme so that we can obtain an experimental set of parts for criticism of the appearance and functioning.
