We have investigated the trouble which you brought to our notice and it would appear that the enamelling operation is not at fault. On the other hand the 'Gaseoid' jointing which is used as a washer between the head and the rocker cover, is in our opinion not suitable and is proably the cause of the trouble. The specimen head submitted to us was enamelled satisfactorily. The adhesion was good and fully resistant to oil. The general quality of the job was good. The 'Gaseoid' jointing gave a distinctly acid reaction and had a relatively high chloride content. These properties are definitely not desirable as they will tend to give rise to corrosion of the metal, and rusting of the iron was evident on the cylinder heads which were faulty. It is significant that the trouble has only occurred since the source of supply of jointings was changed. We have been unable to reproduce the trouble but this is not surprising in view of the fact that we cannot hasten the effect any more than on the car, and it takes six months for the trouble to show itself.
