Bailey - Chief Engineer} X4003 HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/FCW1/LG5.4.27. F.10. CAMSHAFT DRIVE TESTS. re. reproduction of camshaft drive failure - these tests were carried out on X-F-10, on the hangar fitted with a Fairey Felix 2-blader propeller at 2100 r.p.m. throttled. Test (1) Conditions. No splines on upper vertical drive in wheelcase and arranged as per Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}'s scheme driving camshaft via a .187" dia. soft alum: pin in shear. The friction damping device on spring drive was removed and a 2 hrs. endurance run. Results. No failures. Test (2) Conditions. As per test (1) but friction damper made up solid and nut on top of vertical drive scheme slacked back. Results. No failures. Test (3) Conditions. As per test (2) but friction damper removed - 2 hrs. run completed. Results. No failures. Test (4) Conditions. Wheelcase upper vertical drive replaced as std. with splines made 'sloppy' to the extent of .050" clearance but friction damper removed. Results. 5 hrs. run completed - no failures. Test (5) Conditions. As per test (4) but friction damper made up solid. contd :- | ||
