X14 02 X8780 Referring to Mr. Olley's letter Oy2/E72426 in which reference is made to our general report EFC3/T16.6.26 entitled "The Dynamo-Battery Combination of a Chassis Electrical System", their experience with shunt wound generators working with external regulators of the vibrating contact type rather confirms our experience of apparatus of this type which we have so far tested, i.e. mainly apparatus of American manufacture, though there has been one exception of German Bosch manufacture in which we have not seen, so far as our observation goes, similar faults. At the same time we are of the opinion that it would be possible satisfactorily to design regulators of this type which would work consistently. Though one of the objections made to such systems is that overloading occurs when the battery is low, this is avoidable by suitably arranging the output volt-ampere characteristic at which the dynamo plus regulator works; overloading can then only be caused by sticking contacts. Strictly speaking, it is erroneous to call these "voltage regulators" - we do not want to regulate the voltage to constancy, but we want to regulate to a characteristic of drooping volts with increase of amperes, and we can carry this through to any Contd. | ||
