X46175 c. Ey. c. Roy. {Sir Henry Royce} c. Meiling. EFC {E. Fowler Clarke - Electrical Engineer} 2/T. 18th August, 1928. Messrs. The Chloride Elec. Storage Co.Ltd., Clifton Junction, Nr. Manchester. For the attention of Mr. E.C.McKinnon: Dear Sirs, You will recollect that we have been watching the life and performance of various sandwich batteries made up partly with cells and battery cases of your standard 40/50 R.R. make, i.e. 6RR5/1. Although we have as yet had no actual cell failure of these batteries, there are now indications of one or two of these cells going weak. The first group of these batteries was set going in June 1925. X.4449 What we are more particularly writing about at the moment, however, is that the cases of 40/50 and 20 H.P. standard R.R. Exide batteries become faulty much sooner than cases of other make, and in fact in one or two instances have so far rotted (ahead of the usefulness of the cells themselves) as to make it necessary to replace the cells in new cases. For this purpose we are asking our Order Office to send you an order for two standard 20 H.P. Exide 6 XL3/4 battery cases. We will write you further when actual failures of any of these Exide cells occur, giving you, if considered of value, an opportunity of inspection of some of the elements. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED. | ||
