The Claudel Hobson people have brought to our notice their new system of carburetter heating, which I understand they have patented. It is intended particularly for air-cooled engines.

The system consists of connecting the carburetter jackets with a pipe in the exhaust, and with a tank at a higher level. The tank has very little water in it when the engine is cool. The whole system is closed. The pipe in the exhaust, and the carburetter jackets, are arranged with a thermo-syphon circulation. When working, both the pipe and the carburetter jackets are nearly full of steam, and the majority of the water is blown up into the tank. This limits the temperature of the carburetter jacket, but keeps it uniformly hot.

They are asking whether we would like to try this system. If there is any possibility of evaporative cooling coming along, I am inclined to think that we should do better to assist this line, which will of course give us steam for carburetter heating, and not trouble with the Claudel system.

They are also again giving us further particulars with regard to their Bi-Fuel System. The French Government are now adopting this on many of their Hispano engine jobs, and obtaining considerably improved performance. The British Ministry for some reason are very slow with regard to this development, and we have not found an opportunity of carrying out any tests.

Both these schemes would be very interesting to test out, but I think we should have to leave them over until the Expt. Shop have less in hand.
