FILES. x316 16th June, 1936. Phantom III Crankcase Breather. From our verbal report that the crankcase breather pipe with gauze covering on the inlet side was inefficient, so much so, that oil escaped in a stream at high engine revs, and under fast driving conditions the underneath side of the chassis was covered with engine oil. A new design of breather has been made to LeC.5067 incorporating baffle traps in the alum. casting with an oil pipe drain return to the crankcase. This scheme is fitted to 32-EX at present running 15,000 test, only instead of an alum. casting we have it made up in sheet metal, up to date the alum. casting breathers have not been tried but two are now ready to be fitted up. We are quite satisfied with the new scheme from an efficiency point, only an occasional drip and vapour being noticeable from the outlet pipe. The scheme has also been tried out on the test bed with identical results. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/F.Dodd. | ||
