X316 Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} and DY.{F R Danby} from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} E/JNR.{Charles L. Jenner} E.4/HP.23.4.36. Phantom III Crankcase Breather. - LeC.5067. To cope with the over-oiling experienced at 4500 r.p.m. on the Phantom III, we have made a modified breather incorporating an oil Separator draining into the crankcase. This has now been bench tested as reported in Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Swdl.{Len H. Swindell}22/KW.22.4.36, and there now remains confirmation by road test. The scheme bench tested we have had made up from sheet metal, to see whether the device was any good at all, although the final design is an aluminium casting. As it is important that this modification should go on production as soon as possible it would be as well to restrict the output of the present breather system and arrange for the oil connection for the modified type.
