RE MODIFICATION TO INDUCTION SYSTEM WHICH IS BEING PRESSED BY R.{Sir Henry Royce} AS ESSENTIAL FOR F.2B SERIES.

On the 15th inst. we received a wire from R.{Sir Henry Royce} reading as follows :-

"First production turbulent head must have slot induction pipe and revised wiring. The scheme you have in hand not satisfactory. Particulars will be sent by Hives. Present carburetter and throttle unaltered, but valve in exhaust system is cancelled."

On Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} arriving at Derby, Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} and BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} met to discuss the position, and it was decided that since there were forty cars to produce for the Show and demonstration purposes, of which Sales required urgent delivery, we must finish these off to present designs, but in hand R's new design experimentally, which Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} brought with him, and if the Administration agreed with R's demands to replace the condemned parts immediately the new parts were available and agreed to on all the forty cars in question, in the meantime hold up further work on parts condemned by R.{Sir Henry Royce}

The present design which is condemned by R.{Sir Henry Royce} is considered by him to be faulty from an appearance point of view, and still contains the choking valve in the exhaust downtake which has been the source of much complaint and in addition makes it necessary to dismantle the autovac tank before the head can be removed for decarburisation. The new system does away with the choke valve in the exhaust manifold which is always a trouble and source of complaint from squeaking and sticking, and by using R's new weir design gives all the good qualities for starting and slow running which were obtained with the old system without its disabilities.

The weir system which R.{Sir Henry Royce} has incorporated in the new design has been already tried out by the Experimental Department, and has proved successful, and in addition has been run for approximately four thousand miles under cold conditions, and functioned perfectly.

The patterns for the new parts are actually being made, and it will not be long before the new system will be completed and fitted to a car.

The cost of scrap which would be entailed in R's proposal is £602., and this includes the fitting and final dismantling of present system to the forty urgent cars
