Sft.{Mr Swift} c. to LY. c. to Ck.{Mr Clark} X.3426 EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}7/F19.1.20. X.3426 RE. FAULTY STARTER CLUTCH MECHANISM. With further reference to my complaints of the above, in which I asked that instructions should be given for certain specified tests and inspections to be made, I still find I have to dismantle several of the clutch mechanism parts fixed at the rear of the gear box (which is a very difficult and expensive job to do), because the end movement of the jaw clutch is insufficient, the trouble we find being due to the rear bush not being in its correct position. The collar does not abutt up against the aluminium housing. I cannot see how this can have come out in use, as the bush is quite a good fit, and I feel that it has never been fixed correctly in the first place. This is now the fourth case of this happening. I should be glad, therefore, if instructions could be given for the specified check to be made of the movement of this clutch in the gear box before the gear box is passed as fit for erecting in the chassis. This point has not been mentioned in Ck{Mr Clark}'s specified production tests, and is as essential as the actuating box lever movement, which is specified. Could you please arrange for this point to receive inspection on any further gear boxes supplied to the Erecting Dept., further chassis supplied to the Test Dept., and if possible an Inspector to check and if necessary deal with those now on test.
