RE: BORING OUT BRAKE DRUMS.
--------------------------

We have for many years bored out brake drums when they are badly scored in order to avoid expensive renewals particularly after fairly short mileages.

It has been found however, that in the case of Phantom I & II side by side rear brakes the brakes are rendered very spongy even after boring out only .050" oversize.

We have received similar reports from Paris and Cricklewood, and we would like to establish definite limits for the amount of oversize, over which the brake drum is scrap.

As we were able to rebore the concentric brake drums on earlier Phantom I cars as much as .200" oversize without trouble, it was possible to run very big mileages before scrapping the drums, but the life of our present drums seems very short if they cannot be rebored, and we would strongly recommend thickening them up.

We shall be glad to receive your remarks on this matter.
