Valves and Fittings (Continued).

Nos. 2 and 11 were cracked at the bottom of the radius on the head, and it would seem from this that these valves are not yet quite strong enough. We hope to get further information on this point from valves now on test in other units. The stems and seats were in very good condition, considering the mileage. Herewith Ex.I.178 showing points raised and giving "stretch" and wear figures, also a chart giving comparative valve spring figures.

Dynamo Drive. E.55904.

The backlash between the dynamo pinion and the cam wheel was .005, measured on the pitch-line. (Between the idler and cam wheel the backlash was .003"). These gears were fitted new 18. 2. 36 and have done a considerable amount of high speed and endurance work on the test-beds.

Oil Pump LOP.EB.2216.

This was in good condition apart from the bottom spindle and bearing of the driven gear, which were rather deeply grooved and appeared to have been tight. Grooves to allow oil to feed to these bearings would be of advantage in these pumps.

Water Pump LOP.EB.607.

The wear on the spindle and bearings was normal for the mileage and the "Palmette" gland-packing appeared to be in good condition.

The rotor-blades had fouled the cover during test, causing two of them to be bent slightly at the tips.

Tecalemit Oil Filter.

The element was heavily coated with sludge and showed signs of beginning to buckle in the centre.

Delco Remy Ignition Distributor and Governor.

The cam-piece was cracked similarly to that of B.4. Unit (6.B.IV chassis) after its recent 16,000 miles test. The crack is presumably due to faulty manufacture. Herewith sketch giving details.

The bush in one of the contact-breaker arms was worn badly, causing uneven bedding and excessive wear on the contact-
