The spring was held as shown in the sketch, with one end fixed, and the other allowed to move on the swivel. Having had the camber removed by a force acting at its centre, the torque was applied, and the angle between the face of the tap leaf and the horizontal measured as near the centre as practicable. It will be observed from the attached graph, that, (after the preliminary movement) from 2 1/2° to 8° an increase in deflection of 1° is approximately proportional to a torque increase of 34 1/2 lbs.ft., from 8° - 14° to a torque increase of 50 lbs.ft. Graph 2. The spring was clamped down as illustrated, and the lateral deflection measured from a point 2 1/2" from the centre of the spring in the top leaf. As the load was applied, the spring tended to twist, the smaller leaves rising. The angle of twist measured at the same point is plotted in the smaller graph. The same spring was used for both tests.
