the wider the gap, the brighter will be the glow so long as a spark passes.
But if the spark fails for any reason, whether by leakage or too wide a gap, the high-frequency oscillation is absent and the tube glows much less brightly.
Similarly as there is a small voltage at a high frequency on the earthed side of the spark-gaps, a continuous glow of medium intensity is obtained by connecting the tester to it.
If a glass plate condenser be connected across one spark gap the frequency of the applied voltage is not increased and no brighter glow is obtained. But the high-frequency voltage of the earthed side
