Phantom III Tyres.

We have despatched by passenger train to-day 4 modified Dunlop '90' type tyres for trial on the Ph.III under London conditions.

We think that these tyres compare very favourably with the chamfered type tyre for noise, and in addition Dunlops are satisfied that they will have a better life. We should like to emphasize that our anxiety with regard to the wearing qualities of the tyre is not so much consideration for the pocket of the owner as apprehension that the silent qualities of the tyre will not last for very long. In every case we have so far tried, part worn tyres are worse for noise than new tyres. The time taken to reach a noisy state depends upon the durability of the tread.

We have of course no experience of the qualities of adhesion of this new type of Dunlop tyre, but are despatching a set to France almost immediately. As a matter of fact, if satisfactory for noise, we should like to fit the 4 tyres we have sent to you on 32-SX as it passes through London on its way to the coast.

Dunlops think that the non-skidding properties of the modified tyre can be no worse than those of the silent tread.

Unless you find fault with them we should certainly prefer to standardise these tyres to the chamfered tyres.

There is a small difference between the two pairs of tyres we are sending to London, but this does not make any appreciable difference to noise and we should naturally select the one with the greater non-skid surface.
