1020 To Bentley Motors Ltd. Derby................ Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Copy to ............. D/BP Levallois Sr/VA4/CM.16.12.36 re: R.R.56 BEARINGS AND LINERS (Shims) for 4 1/4 BENTLEY CHASSIS.ENGINES. -------------------------------- With further reference to your RmS/R.12.12.36 we attach to D/BP's copy our order no. I240 for 15 sets of RR.56 shims for the main bearings and IO sets of RR.56 shims for the big ends, of 4 1/4 litre chassis. We note by your memo that you are very short of RR.56 shims, we therefore, suggest that sets of shims for main and big ends are sent to us in batches of 3 or 5. Until such time/as the RR.56 big end bearings are available, we will fit RR.56 shims to existing Hall's metal big end bearings. We note, from your Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}2/AP.II.12.36, that as soon as the material is available the existing Hall's metal big end bearings are to be replaced by RR.56 bearings and shims. We quite appreciate that there will be a certain lapse of time before we can expect to receive from you supplies of connecting rods complete with the RR.56 bearings, we should however point out that apart from it being more convenient to an owner it would be less costly if the tightening up of the main bearings etc., and the fitting of connecting rods with RR.56 bearings were carried out at the same time, of course unless the fitting of RR.56 big ends could wait until a car is ready for an R.20 engine clean ( after about 20.000 miles of running). As far as we can see the most economical way of attending to cars would be to tighten up the mains and fit RR.56 shims to all the bearings after a car has covered from 12.000 to 15.000 kms. and then when a car is ready for an R.20 (chargeable to owner), we could at the same time fit RR.56 bearings to the big ends. We shall be pleased to have your views. Sr/VA. vd [Signature] | ||
