The standardisation of a new Pilot Jet, considering existing stock levels, customer complaints, and engine problems.

and at that time it was considered so urgent that it was decided, although we had no design from R.{Sir Henry Royce}, that we should press forward the standardisation of the experimental one made at Derby. The standardisation sheet was sent round and it was agreed to by every-body except BJ. who considered that as in the meantime a design had been received from WW. we ought to hold up the standardisation sheets and send round other standardisation sheets for the improved design.

If the fitting of the Pilot Jet is now delayed as instructed by CJ. and BJ. until the whole of the parts for the existing primer are used up, it will mean very considerable delay. On some of the small parts there are as many as 1000 pieces in stock. If we dismiss these because they are of very little value, it would still appear that there would have to be approx. 500 more sets of the existing primers fitted to use up the stock.

We have already had to supply a number of these Pilot Jets to customers who have complained as regards the present starting arrangement. There is not only the question of the improvement in starting to be considered, but we know that there have been a number of cases of seized engines, and worn valves and guides and these troubles would be definitely reduced with the fitting of the pilot jet.

We should like instructions saying whether we should act on R's instructions to adopt at once, or whether we should delay it until the existing stocks are used up as instructed by yourself and BJ.
