Rear Axle Bevel Gears 5's pitch ground teeth. X482

The third set of these gears 22-65 teeth are now fitted and on the road. They are very poor and are much too noisy. This is the third set and the previous two sets were condemned, being too noisy.

Steering Pivots. X.168.

A pair of pivots F3783/4 have been run on the bumping test for some time. This is the pivot which is recessed between the journals on the stub, and which ran on the reversal test for 100 hours without breaking. On the 3" bumps at 105 revs. per min. one F3784 (near side) has broken off at the root of the stub in 41 hrs 6 mins, and the other F3783 (off side) is still running having done over 54 hours. This seems a satisfactory result although I would rather not see the breakage occur at this point.

The front axle F3381 (standard) broke near the inside of the near side spring in 37 hours, therefore the pivot outlasted the axle by 4 hours. The axle cracked after 24 hours running. We cannot yet obtain an axle with the longer taper on the top flange, as soon as we get one we will put it on the bumping test.
