The Autocar, February 10th, 1939 221 After a high-speed run on the autobahn: beside the car are John Dugdale, of "The Autocar," V.{VIENNA} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Morgan and A.{Mr Adams} W. Sleator, manager of Bentleys in Paris. What Car is This? Cruising at 100 m.p.h.: Fuel Consumption of Over 20 m.p.g. at 80 m.p.h. FEW readers will guess the identity of this modernistic streamlined saloon at first glance. A careful examination, however, reveals the familiar winged emblem on the radiator cowling denoting that it is a 4¼-litre Bentley from the Derby works. This car, the prototype of an additional model, has been undergoing long-distance and high-speed tests on the Continent at which The Autocar was represented. The results obtained from the car illustrated here, which was actually built to private order, have been so successful that the Bentley company are preparing to supply replicas. The specification of the new car includes a more powerful version of the 4¼-litre engine and higher gear ratios. A carefully streamlined body has been developed by means of models and with the co-operation of Rolls-Royce aircraft experts. Details of the outstanding performance of this Continental Bentley will be given in a forthcoming and exclusive article. Good lines. 'Ware ice at 80 m.p.h.! German police pose.
